Another Michael is something special. That’s how they were first described to us by our friend Sarah M. and it’s a most fitting descriptor. The formerly Albany-based, now Philadelphia-residing band has a way of hushing crowds with the magnetism of Michael Doherty’s voice and the subtleness of their songwriting. On a chilly night in No Face Studios this past January, we were wowed by this particular ballad and knew it needed to be part of our Valentine’s Day love song series to share with you.
Our friend Eric let us give this song new life in Comm/union: Fishtown’s finest AirBnB and beyond. They have a way of making a home you’ve never been to before feel better than your own. The confident coziness of the living room in a balance of cool and warm hues was the perfect backdrop for Michael’s solo rendition of “The Boulder.” Paired with Michael in the stillness and isolation of Comm/union’s white bedroom, the video and song combine together to an equally sad and reassuring portrait of love. On this snowy, winter shoot, Bob Sweeney on visuals and Jake Detwiler on audio found the softness in starkness of this clip.
