Tune: Stinkus – “Not Like Dying”

February 8, 2024

The debut single from Stinkus instantly feels familiar. “Not Like Dying” is the first song from the new project by Tyler Thompson. Having already written and produced for girlhouse and WILD, Thompson’s musicality is evident in this song’s effortless flow and perfect emotional tug of war. An intentionally dizzying refrain winds up in repetitions until the instrumentation bursts open into a wall of guitars in the second half of the track. It is a song that makes it point patiently yet fervently. What we love most about “Not Like Dying” is that it captures the lovesickness of a new relationship with the just the right amount of fuzz. Filling in all the little transitional gaps with blips of outer textures, the track has a satisfying feeling of completeness from beginning to the ending fade out. Thompson says of the song:

“This is my first release with this new project. My name’s Tyler. I write and produce for other artists and have had other bands (girlhouse, WILD) But this is my first time singing on my own and these are my songs that I solely make. Written, produced, mixed, mastered by me. This song talks about the time when you first start dating someone and you start to fall in love but you aren’t sure what’s too soon or inappropriate because you basically just met this person or at least just started romantically seeing them. But everything you do together feels amazing and you can’t stop thinking about them.”
