Tune: Laura Elliott – “Better Off Alone”

February 16, 2022

All of the songs that Laura Elliott has released have featured consistently excellent songwriting. But, there’s something so pure about her newest single that’s immediately inviting. “Better Off Alone” is a break up song with a focus on honesty. While most obviously conveyed in the lyrics, the tale of lost love also comes through more vividly thanks to the patient, easy way the pieces of this song come together. Elliott’s voice gently soars atop the warm glow and fuzzy edges of this song’s production. As she presses into a jazz-tinted vibrato at the end of these phrases, the emotion of the melody sinks deeper into the sway of this acoustic guitar. “Better Off Alone” sonically provides a comforting antidote to the pain and pondering in the lyrics. Its swirl of pleasing textures is like a warm blanket in a cold winter.

Elliott said of the song:

“I wrote Better Off Alone after my first heartbreak coming out of high school. It was a way for me to process and put words to my feelings, which kickstarted my love for songwriting. It’s basically me reflecting on the end of the relationship and cutting contact with that person, navigating life without them and missing them but knowing that chapter is closed. I think it’s easy to remember the good memories and idealize a person, but you have to remind yourself of the reality of the situation and why it’s healthier for you to be on your own. This one is extremely special to me since it was the first time I discovered how much I love writing music, it was one of the first songs I wrote.”
