Video: Alexander Biggs – “Miserable”

October 1, 2019

Alexander Biggs‘s new song and clip are a twinkling web of fragility designed to catch all kind of feelings. A beacon of hope fully immersed in darkness, “Miserable” is comforting, inquisitive, and intensely self aware. It’s a bright display of a deep current of sadness that clings to nostalgia for solace and softly wonders how far its sadness radiates. The layers of acoustic guitar, synth, sleigh bells, and more all form into a cinematic sweep of sound that lifts the melody into an ever-sparkling wonderland.

Biggs says,

Miserable is a realization that our own sadness can impact the ones around us. When I wrote it, it was almost like a soft plea — Am I weighing you down? Is my hurt hurting you? What are we going to do?— It was a consoling and an explanation, a conversation and a statement — a deep sigh and a head on the shoulder. It was like a long timeline happening all at once. There was misery and joy and it was synchronous and fluid.”

The film clip by Michael Ridley reassures viewers that misery does indeed love company. Featuring cozy cameos from Feelds, Merpire, RAT!Hammock, and Ruby Gill, the video focuses in on the isolation that often accompanies sadness from the point of view of a seemingly friendly, unnoticed ghost. Will the ghost ever scare anyone or find a companion amongst the warm, saturated tones of the clip? Watch above to find out.
