Tune: The Guests – “Doldrums”

January 12, 2015

We’ve got The Guests to thank for representing new wave in Philly. Featuring some ever-prolific members of Philly fuzz-poppers SHEER MAG, The Guests are making music with a darkened edge and a taste of the past. I’ve been following them since their demo “Third Coming” back in November and enjoying their latest single “Doldrums” even more. “Doldrums” is simple tune that uses the dissonance of the happy, jangly guitars and the dejected lyrics to create neutral sonic balance. Between that battling bass and guitar lines and the throaty echoes of “doldrums” amid the chorus, it perfectly captures the understated misery and stagnation winter boredom that sets in this time of year.
