Tune: Bess Atwell – “Release Myself”

February 21, 2024

The songs from Bess Atwell‘s upcoming album have each felt like little sonic treasures. But, there’s something enduringly charming about her latest tune, “Release Myself.” A cathartic anthem about having the power to let go in the crush of one’s own thoughts, the tune is grips tighter and tighter to its hopeful sentiment as it soars towards freedom. Every repetition of the radiating chorus is a step forward. As a whirlwind of rippling guitars seep in through the cracks of the vocal melody, “Release Myself” really comes to life.

Atwell says of the song:

There are always a couple of songs on a record that just sort of fall out of you and this was one of them. This was the first time I’ve managed to write about my panic disorder without slipping too far into sorry-for-myself or cheesy, faux-empowering territory. It’s a song that says “hey I’m struggling but I’m not a victim”.

“Release Myself” is the third single from Atwell’s upcoming album Light Sleeper. Produced by Aaron Dessner, the album is due out May 24th on Real Kind Records. Watch the song’s beautiful, sunlit video directed by Dylan Friese-Greene above and listen to more from Bess Atwell here.
