There’s a purity in the emotional expressiveness of Mali Velasquez debut single “Tore.” On the song, the Nashville via Texas singer-songwriter lyrically grapples with self acceptance and its nuances over a warm and textured backdrop of folk-rooted indie rock. Her voice glides through subtle movements and shifts on the vocal melody that reach out to the listener as this song ebbs and flows in intensity. Between the song’s backbone outlined in the softness of an acoustic guitar and whirring electric guitar in the distance, there’s an irresistible charm to this debut single.

Velasquez said of the track:

“‘Tore’ is a song mostly about my own way of self-sabotaging. I have no idea how to combat being embarrassed all the time still, but explaining it some has helped. Being comfortable in my skin is something that feels out of reach a lot of the time. I put a lot of my ideas of not knowing how to feel or what to do or eat or wear into this song.”

The video for “Tore” is directed by Reed Schick. Playing into the vulnerable heart of the track, it features a wide variety of close ups with an emphasis on the body movement. It’s constantly moving shots are saturated in a soft lighting the perfectly complements the twangy edge of the tune.
