Gold Spectacles explore unexpected loss amongst warm synths and guitars on their latest single. The UK-based duo retain their insatiably catchy choruses but also get quite personal on “How To Make A Million.” Amie’s vocals gently unfold intimate details of the emotional aftermath of her father’s sudden passing as the duo’s soft and subtle production style gives the tale just the right amount of textural punch. One of the things we enjoy most about this duo’s songwriting is the importance they place on making their transitional moments just as impactful as their instantly memorable choruses. Just like their other songs, “How To Make A Million” flows with an effortless ease that puts the poignant lyrics at the forefront.
Amie said of the track:
“On the first sunny day of spring in 2017, my dad woke up early, got on his motorbike and headed for the coast. He didn’t come home. Nothing can prepare you for the loss of a parent. The hollowness, the emptiness, the unfinished conversations, the unexpected guilt. In my situation, it was very sudden – the news of the accident didn’t seem real. I still have a hard time believing he is really gone. I keep expecting him to turn up. Time is the only thing that can separate you from the emotion but when you stop and think about it, it’s still as raw as ever. This is definitely the hardest song we’ve written.”
“How To Make A Million” will be a part of Gold Spectacles’ new EP due to be released in May. You can listen to more from Gold Spectacles here.
