DEADLETTER turn a doughnut barcode swap into insatiably catchy post-punk on their new single “Pop Culture Connoisseur.” Lyrically centered around the case of PC Read and his scanning of a barcode for carrots instead of his box of a dozen doughnuts, the Yorkshire group’s latest song pulses with punchy phrases and rhythms. The chorus lands fiercely with each repetition between the verses examining Read’s case in detail and from a larger societal lens. Punctuating percussion, angular guitars and a tenacious bassline keep the song driving forward with gusto. Clever and invigorating, “Pop Culture Connoisseur” makes the kind of raucous splash that causes “quite the uproar” and is hard to forget.
“Pop Culture Connoisseur” is the first in the second volume of Nice Swan Records‘ monthly ‘Nice Swan Introduces…’ series. This series, like the rest of the releases from Nice Swan, has been all hits and no misses in our opinion. Listen to more from DEADLETTER here.
