Video: M.A.G.S. – “Choked Out”

April 19, 2021

A dose of reality with a golden, sonic facade, M.A.G.S. has turned the highs and lows of ruminating on a decision into something very catchy on his latest single, “Choked Out.” M.A.G.S. is the project of multi-instrumentalist Elliott Douglas that began in Buffalo and has continued to grow in Los Angeles. While the music of M.A.G.S. is rooted in indie rock, Douglas’ style has radiated into elements of pop, garage rock, funk, and more. “Choked Out” is angreat and particularly punchy example of the frankness of Douglas’ lyrics and the rhythmic focus of his songwriting.

Locked in the struggles of the sometimes harsh and other times bright truths of a choice, Douglas digs in on the song’s verses that are punctuated by a contrasting, yelled pre-chorus. But, the track’s sonically euphoric chorus releases all that built up tension so beautifully alongside synth flourishes and horn flares. “Choked Out” and its ensnaring chorus become more addictive with each repetition, replicating the dizzying effect of the lyrical push and pull with charisma.

In the song’s clip directed by Mitch deQuilettes captured on 16mm, Douglas performs alone in and around the rooms of a house. Using lighting of all different hues and split screens, Douglas’ inner lyrical dialogue comes to life visually in a way that perfectly reflects the fascinating frenzy of the song. (Note: This video contains strobe effects and rapidly flashing lights.)

“Choked Out” is the first single from his debut album Say Things That Matter, which will be released summer 2021. Listen to more from M.A.G.S. here.
