Pushpin have started off the year with a tune that is both hearty and imaginative. The South London four-piece turned have turned an earnest search for confidence into a wild ride of warm noise, barreling guitars, articulated rhythms, and a golden whir of synths on their new single, “Folds.” A wholly engaging musical affair, the song rises from the interlocking bounce of vocal mantras with the soft buoyancy of the bassline to a consuming wall of playful riffs and sustained synths.
There’s so many twists and turns in this tune that lead seamlessly into the next evolution of this vibrant world of sound. It’s the extra little layers and touches of percussive noise that color in the lines and make this song really come to life. After all the energy expelled through the majority of the track, the ending fades to a softer groove as the lyrics more gently conclude on an admission that brings to light the reality of where the songwriter is in their journey to confidence and happiness.
