Ida Lune acknowledge the persistence of loneliness and set it adrift on their latest single “Apart.” In meditative repetitions above the sweep of strings and the soft plucks of an acoustic guitar, the New Zealand trio gracefully reach towards the strings in the back of the heart where pangs of loneliness reside. Harmonies in rhythmic patters and a resounding refrain bring a vibrancy to the emotion of the vocal melody, even as it wanders. Rising in an ethereal round of delicate voices that press against the steadiness of the strings, the track tangles the grip of isolation with the warm support of the tender arrangement until the lines blur enough for that familiar sadness to subside.
The nature-drenched clip for “Apart” was created with cinematographer Lilian Pang amongst the Red Rocks (Pari-whero) in Wellington. Highlighted in the morning light, the band carry flowers along the shoreline before setting them in the water to send them out to sea. Natural beauty of the landscape, the display of flowers, and pops of color in the band’s attire all combine into a continually stunning visual that feels wholly connected to the song.
“Apart” is just one track off of Ida Lune’s self-titled debut album which is out today, November 18th, on Home Alone Music. You can listen to it on Spotify here or Bandcamp here.
