Fleece turn requited affection into a radiating beacon of positivity on their latest tune, “Upside Down.” The Montreal four-piece have really gone three for three in hits with the singles they’ve released in 2020. But, there’s something extra special about the sultry groove of this track that lingers with a certain confidence. The lyrical flirtations mingle in a call in response with the song’s warm-toned instruments as they move together in malleable and catchy phrase-ending riffs. Lead singer and songwriter Matt Rogers’ tender vocals, a bit of trumpet, and sweet, little high harmonies are woven seamlessly into the track’s increasingly complex, blissful boogie that only gets bigger and brighter as it progresses. A rhythmically playful love song with a golden charm, “Upside Down” will leave listeners feeling as good as the lyrics indicate.
Rogers said of the song, “Moments like these used to bring on feelings of shame and confusion. I guess because I was still feeling weird about being gay. But now I’m comfy in my skin and take moments like these as a little jolt of espresso to keep me chugging along. There’s nothing like the feeling of mutual attraction.”
