There’s an undeniable pull to Joseph Futak‘s latest single. It’s slow and steady enough to even hang in the air of the song’s fading echoes of Wurlitzer. “Scrambling Around” is a huge stride from Futak in the defining of his comforting and softly bold sound. Centered around Futak’s coolly unwinding baritone vocal, the tune traverses a warm sonic palette of instrumentation in lyrical search of a connection lost but still very much desired.
While patient in nature, the song keeps its momentum fluid even in its quietest moments while the listener waits for Futak’s vocals to recommence in their nostalgic fondness and present daze. The melody’s climbing and retreating patterns are a sonic mirror for the waves of emotion in the lyrics and sink in deeper and deeper as the song progresses. From the lush, harmonized ‘oo’s to the sharp strums of guitar, every moment of “Scrambling Around” is a charming treat.
Joseph Futak’s Pigeon Sounds EP will be out through Fox Food Records on September 5th. Listen to “Scrambling Around” and more Joseph Futak on Spotify here.
