A haven for positive attention and belonging dressed in sparkling synths, Lizzy & the Fanatics‘ “Middle Child” is a blurred-edged starburst of dream pop. Fitting snuggly in the artful pop scene of Montreal, Lizzy’s songwriting shines in the sweet ascensions, careful arrangement, and delightfully catchy choruses of this tender tune. The bass and guitar playfully toy with the brightness of these synths and the effervescence of this soaring and diving vocal melody. As the song continually strives for sonic radiance, the lyrics work to create an emotional retreat for the pressures and longings of growing up. Lizzy said of the song:
I wrote this dreamy synth-driven, indie-pop song after watching the 1995 movie Welcome to the Doll House. In this movie, the main character Dawn is a middle child who struggles for love and attention. Like this movie, the song encapsulates the coming of age feeling of wanting attention and dreaming about being ”the only one”.
