Tamara & the Dreams‘ latest tune is as playfully frank as ever. Fitting snuggly in momentum between the previous released “LO-FI” and “P1nk Sungl4sses,” the new single from the Melbourne four-piece is another witty ode to a modern-day struggle. Tamara Reichman has a knack for combining vivid lyrical snippets of realities that aren’t commonly addressed, surrounding them with a warm, distorted choir of guitars, and releasing them into an unforgettably catchy chorus. “FUNNY!” is a great example of just that. It tackles the incessant use of internet-based humor in relationships and does so with a refreshing candor. Between the gently falling and quickly rising melody and that triumphant key change, this song is a rollercoaster ride of bright indie rock that rockets listeners to a blissful place far from the ensnarement of amusements detailed in the lyrics.
Reichman said of the song:
“FUNNY! is a statement about the downfall of our generation to sarcasm, irony and meme culture. When we build our identities around being ‘funny’ all of the time, we often end up hiding up our true selves. I learnt this lesson during a close friendship where my frustration at my friend being constantly deadpan and ironic allowed me to look in the mirror at my own habits of using humour as a shield.”
