One Swell Day: SASAMI

July 31, 2019

SASAMI makes music filled with wonder. The power in Sasami Ashworth’s (aka SASAMI) music derives from a gentle place, holding tightly to the strength of her voice. Carefully arranged and thoughtfully delivered, the Los Angeles-based artist’s particular brand of indie rock develops slowly with a mystical sort of sheen. Sonically, it has all of the bones of indie rock but is tinted with colorful peculiarity instantly recognizable as her own. As enchanting as SASAMI’s self-titled, debut album is to listen to recorded, it is even more electric live as the whirring symphony of guitar sounds and her sweet voice really come alive.

When SASAMI came through Portland on tour earlier this year, she snapped some photos for us on a disposable camera before her show at the Doug Fir Lounge. It’s hard to imagine anyone not having fun on tour with Slut Island and SASAMI’s bandmates and her photos are just a peek into the amusement. She also made us a playlist of songs she’s been listening to on tour. Gentle and intriguing with a steady pulse, the collection of songs has the same appealing edge as SASAMI’s own music. Look above and listen below.

SASAMI is on tour through October and coming to a city near you. Check out her upcoming tour dates here.
