Michael Rault grows his own blossoming brand of sunny rock’n’roll from roots buried in decades past. The Canadian rocker’s new album, It’s a New Day Tonight, is a departure in complexity and maturity from the fuzz rock of his 2015 debut, Living Daylight. Recorded at Daptone House of Soul in Brooklyn, the collection sparkles in warm tones with an overarching, steady sway. It’s a blast of warm rock from the past that has its dreamy eyes set on the future and is a full throttle, guitar solo-filled good time live.
When Michael stopped by Philadelphia a few weeks ago, he and his band snapped pictures on a disposable camera before and after their show at Johnny Brenda’s. From the darkness of the venue to the bright lights of South Philly’s brightest cheesesteak hotspot, they captured the pure joy of Skee-ball and their quest to grab a cheesesteak on film. Flip through the photos above as you listen to the playlist of golden oldies below that Michael put together for us. It’s a great sonic window into his own music.
