We’ve been hoping and wishing for this new Kississipi record and it’s starting off just as cleverly biting as we thought it might. “Cut Yr Teeth” is the first, gritty step in the evolving sound of Philadelphia’s own queen of DIY touring and ultimate scene supporter, Zoe Reynolds (aka Kississippi). Since first watching Kississippi as a duo in a West Philly backyard in 2014, we’ve been eager to hear everything they release. The sonic elevation on this latest track is due in part to Zoe’s growth as a songwriter and musician and her work in molding her new album, Sunset Blush, with Kyle Pulley at Headroom Studios in Philadelphia. Together, the pair have found the perfect balance of driving guitars, layered vocals, and energetic drums to pack in the confidence amidst darkness that pervades the song. “The person you made yourself out to be would feel sorry for what you’ve done to me” is a powerful sentiment that resonates with both pain and perseverance.
Sunset Blush is out on SideOneDummy Records this spring.
