Minimalism makes Anna St. Louis‘ “Fire” come alive. Though relatively new to expressing herself through song, Anna exudes a knowing wisdom in her first single from her new album First Songs. The refrain gets lost in dusty repetition that seems to pull from the cultures of her hometown of Kansas City, her stint at art school in Philadelphia, and her current home of Los Angeles. “Fire” embodies folk of generations past in tone and tempo but is illuminated by careful production and Anna’s soft voice.
Anna St. Louis is the perfect follow up to Shannon Lay as the second artist on Kevin Morby’s new WOODSIST RECORDS imprint. If all of his artists are this promising, it’s sure to become my newest label to watch. First Songs is out 11/3 on Mare Records and you can pre-order it here.
