Tune: The Creases – “Impact”

May 3, 2016

It’s appropriate that The Creases‘ new single sounds like an awakening. Gone for a bit but never forgotten, the young Brisbane group have been relatively quiet since the release of one single last year (“Point”). Singer and guitarist Joe Agius won the People’s Choice for Most Promising Male Songwriter at the Queensland Music Awards this year and you can hear why in the group’s blazing new track. Written by Agius on the challenges of balance in a creative life, “Impact” flourishes with a depth yet heard in the normally atmospheric pop of The Creases. Britpop influence is obvious in the colorful arrangement of a variety of textures the overall amplitude of the yearning tune. Within the familiar pastel pop, a 90’s style shimmy as well as a pre-chorus and outro of horns can be easily recognized as the work of Liam McGorry (Saskwatch/Dorsal Fins/Eagle and The Worm). It’s the same brilliant pop writing inflated to make room for a more expansive and polished world of musical ingenuity. While Agius may still be searching for a way to harmonize his life, he has certainly found a fresh balance of sound in “Impact.” Here’s to an equally impressive album with more of the same.
