It’s all too easy to fall in love with Queen of Jeans‘ bright, luscious pop. One listen through “Dance (Get Off Your Ass)” and I was fully hooked. The song glides forward through demure verses and a lighthearted chorus with a surf-infused sway. Dreamy harmonies envelope the story as it slowly unfolds into a sparkling swirl of instrumentation and then back into singer and guitarist Miriam Devora’s high register.
Devora had the following to say about the song’s beginnings:
I wrote Dance kind of spur of the moment – just sitting at home with my guitar. I remember the melody and first line coming to me instantly, and then it just built from there to the first chorus. I sent a garage band demo to Matheson with just guitar and the three vocal parts and she loved it. Admittedly, I wrote it as a sort of quirky, little thing to amuse her while she was stuck at work. But, she kept bringing it up afterwards, so it inspired me to fine tune and finish the song.
For the video, filmmaker Bob Sweeney and I set out to capture the playful romantic essence of the song in a setting that had just as much character. The lovely staff of Tattooed Mom in South Philly allowed us to fill their one-of-a-kind space with all the sweet harmonizing, lollipop-sucking, pool-playing, hip-swinging fun that Queen of Jeans has to offer. Splicing in shots on black and white Super 8 and color 16mm film, Sweeney perfectly showcased the group’s lively personality, reimagining the tune as though the group was singing it to themselves. Scott Stitzer and Nick Barnes of Stolen Studios also did a great job of soaking up the song just the way it reverberated amongst the graffiti-coated walls of Tattooed Mom.
Queen of Jeans are set to release their self-titled debut EP on January 22nd via Third Uncle Records and Super Fan 99 Records in the UK. See Queen of Jeans live and in denim at the JUMP curated Red Bull Sound Select show at The Foundry on January 21st or their album release show at Kung Fu Necktie on January 30th with Louie Louie and The Mysteries.
