The heads of Breakup Records also make some pretty gritty/sweet slow-fi music themselves. Alex and Sierra Haager combine their music-making talents with that of Andrew Meininger as bed. to create lo-fi tunes that sit comfortably somewhere between grunge and lo-fi pop. On their fourth single, “Fremm,” the band wades through a balance delicacy and harshness, refinement and gruffness, and intimacy and distance. That bass riff really drills home the reliability in the humdrum repetition of “We shouldn’t wait / ’til the morning / We shouldn’t wait / This shit is boring / We shouldn’t wait / I’m on your side.”
Like the song, the video, directed by Jess N Pierson, is representative of the bands home: Portland. Blurring and blipping through closeup and constantly moving shots of little things present in the band’s every day life, the collaged clip echoes the style and essence of the band’s artfully lackadaisical sound.
