Yowler is an intimate solo project that will dig its way into the crevasses of your musical memory in haunting wisps of folk. Out in Columbus, Ohio, Maryn Jones has been making beautiful music as a member of both Saintseneca and All Dogs. But, her solo project, Yowler, is something quite different. Jean’s softly sung words resonate earnestly with underlying personal pain embedded in overarching truths. This intimacy is matched in the surrounding instrumentation as gentle acoustic guitar and piano lines slide and glide amongst one another to sink Jean’s lyrics into a dark sea of mystical folk. The first two tunes she released balance each other in intentional drive and drifting contemplation. “7 Towers” burrows into her enveloping sound with purposeful, sweeping guitar and distant, ethereal tinkering. On a more sorrowful note, “The Offer” is a simple prayer that evokes imagery of painful isolation wound in swaying phrases of melancholic guitar. Her latest single, “Water,” is the new albums starting track. It leads the listener right inside the dark, swirling soundscape the record is centered around, diving into the vivid lyrical pictures and contemplations she will further explore.
Yowler’s debut cassette will be out March 10 on Double Double Whammy and we can’t wait.
