July 29, 2021

Everything about Georgia Lines‘ new track, “Call Me By My Name,” and its clip is smooth. The latest from the New Zealand artist is a cool-toned charmer that weaves a hint of R&B and a touch of bossa nova into a rippling sort of pop. Written with Djeisan Suskov, the song is driven by subtle textural elements like little flourishes of synth, the tenderness and intimacy in Lines’ voice, and careful piano chords. There’s a fluidity and patience in the melody’s progression that brings out the sincerity in the lyrical wonderings and pleas. “Call Me By My Name” is a gentle world of sound that swirls in a mesmerizing waves until the end.

Created with funding assistance from NZ On Air and directed by Lines, the video for the track captures the song’s push and pull well. Spliced shots of Lines singing in structurally or color opposing outfits atop one another brings a curiosity to the romanticism of the lapping waves and green foliage of the backdrops. The more humorous candids that pop in as the song progresses also bring out a bit of lightheartedness in the otherwise serious video.
