Tune: Rugs – “Skylight Footprint”

March 6, 2017

This track from Philadelphia’s Rugs is delirium at its bedroom pop finest. “Skylight Footprint” is a short but powerfully painted picture of spiraling dread delivered with a comforting warmth. Richard Smith (Rugs) really takes a singular moment of intensity and spreads it in layers across a crackling drum machine. You can hear his mind reaching for sanity through the increasingly frenzied repetition of that dizzying guitar riff and the worrying lyrics. Rising delicately from softness to torment, the song somehow matches familiarity with discomfort in a way that makes you want to relive the experience.
