One Swell Day: Dilly Dally

Dilly Dally‘s gentle grunge has been finding its way onto our playlists on and off the blog for awhile. There is something irresistible swaying in singer and guitarist Katie Monks’ melodic snarl and the surcharged guitars of the Toronto band. On their recent tour stop in Philadelphia, Kung Fu Necktie‘s red-shrouded cavern perfectly absorbed and spit back their frenetic energy. Seamlessly transitioning from a cover of Drake‘s “Know Yourself” cover (featuring a particularly gnarly screech) to their own “Purple Rage,” the band stayed locked in a constant oscillation, subtly rocking on beat like metronomes of hair and lowly slung guitars. Musicianship and showmanship came naturally to the group as they lit up the stage with an ebb and flow reflected in the crowd’s involuntary head nodding.

Before and after the show, the band snapped some pictures for us on a disposable camera. Continuing the snapshot of the night form their perspective, they also compiled a varied and thoroughly engaging playlist that spans genres, time, and sentiments. Monks had the following to say about the collection:

The band-van is called “Killer Whale” — it’s in that van that we listened to all the songs on that playlist (except for those Dilly Dally songs, cause otherwise we’d spew). The Simpsons’ songs aren’t good when you’re in heavy traffic… nor is 1992 by Blur… It’s all relative to the driver & their vibe, ya know?
