Digging Deeper: BRONCHO – “I Don’t Really Want to Be Social”

As part of their Tape-A-Day-A-Thon, Lolipop Records released a cassette of Oklahoma power-pop masters BRONCHO‘s 2011 debut “Can’t Get Past The Lips” today.

Sometimes I think when people hear power-pop, they assume they are going to hear something outdated and tirelessly repetitive. Such is not the case with BRONCHO. Take last year’s ‘doo’-filled blaster “Class Historian.” It’s constant stream of the syllable is addictive as opposed to annoying. Used artfully as a hook, the lengthy succession of ‘doo’s becomes an unmissable sing-a-long challenge akin to the handclaps in the Friends’ theme song. While “Class Historian” delivers the same energy and bright pop with a polished sheen, “I Don’t Really Want to Be Social” gives a slightly scruffy taste of where that all began. An introvert anthem with sunny swagger, the song digs in with overdriven guitars strummed with syncopation and a yellable and pointed chorus.
