Digging Deeper: SOAK – “Sea Creatures”

January 19, 2015

SOAK has a way with words and simple but enchanting melodies. The oceanic imagery and quaint truths expressed in young Bridie Monds-Watson’s (aka SOAK) gentle ballad “Sea Creatures” make it so instantly lovable. It was an early hit for the Irish lass and is now coming back around as an officially released single. Digging deeper, I’ve placed below for you a video from almost exactly two years ago of her performing the song on live TV for the first time. In the video, Monds-Watson is only 16 years old. Having nothing to do with having heard it first, I quite prefer the simplicity and natural vocals of the early playing. Her voices shines with that unique timbre and you get a more intimate sense of the songs message. While the added backing sounds and sea breeze make sense in the fully-produced, new version, it still makes me come back to enjoy the older version. Now, you have both to enjoy and can choose your own favorite.
